Yesterday was a big day for DC fans as James Gunn and Peter Safran finally released their slate of upcoming DC projects to the public. Many were ecstatic about the universe that DC Studios is aiming to build; even those who claim to be Marvel fans are happy for DCU fans who have waited a long time to get back at their game. However, given that Gunn is a former member of the MCU’s family, some can't help but ask if his DCU will just be another shade of Marvel.
“A lot of people think this can be Marvel 2.0. And definitely, I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel. You know, I think that we have a lot of differences. I think that one of the reasons why I love DC is it is another universe. It's an alternate world. In Marvel, generally, it's, you know, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and then everyplace else in the world is a fictional universe for some reason. Here at DCU, we have Metropolis and Gotham and Themyscira, and Atlantis and all of that is another fictional universe.” justified Gunn.
The DC Studios co-head also clarified that this new DCU will be more planned out than Marvel, which made some fans quick to think that it’s a subtle shade given that MCU’s Phase 4 did not do well compared to the other phases that came before it.

“We are telling a big, huge central story that is like Marvel, except for, I think that we're a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we've gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we're also creating a universe that is like Star Wars, where there's different times, different places, different things, or like Game of Thrones, where characters are a little bit more morally complex,” he explained.
However, despite claiming that Marvel didn't have it planned out in the beginning, they still manage to turn events around by producing noteworthy projects. “Marvel didn't have everything completely worked out ahead of time, but they did a lot of things well -- one of which is not giving up. I love that about Kevin [Feige] and Lou [D'Esposito] and the old gang -- that I've seen them turn bad movies into okay movies, okay movies into good movies, and good movies into great movies because they do not f---ing stop. They give it whatever it needs to make it as good as it can be until the 11th hour, and there'll be editing the day before the premiere. A lot. Too much.” Gunn narrated.
This is just the beginning of DC Studios' reclaiming itself. Until they release their promised slate, they will remain a work in progress, and fans can only hope that they will be worth rooting for.
