James Gunn Spoke to Original Suicide Squad Director Before Working on Sequel

Working on a follow-up to an established film is undoubtedly a daunting task for any director. So it's no surprise that James Gunn actually reached out to the man who worked on Suicide Squad before he began working on its upcoming sequel.

Gunn recently hosted an Instagram Q&A where he admitted that he spoke to David Ayer before taking on the Suicide Squad sequel/reboot (via Comicbook.com).

"David Ayer is a great guy [and] we have discussed and I've told him what we're up to with The Suicide Squad at least a little bit," Gunn revealed.

It's great to know that Gunn wanted to make sure Ayer was aware of what he had planned for The Suicide Squad now that the sequel will be taking a completely different direction from what Ayer had established. And it may have worked because the Bright director has expressed his own excitement for the sequel.

"DC is blessed to have James Gunn," Ayer tweeted. "I'm getting my popcorn ready."

The Suicide Squad will bring back Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang from the original film. They will be joined by Idris Elba, John Cena, Storm Reid, Flula Borg, Nathan Fillion, Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson, Alice Braga, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker, Taika Waititi, Joaquín Cosío, Mayling Ng, Juan Diego Botto, Tinashe Kajese, Julio Ruiz, and Jennifer Holland.

The movie is currently in production and is scheduled for release on August 6, 2021.
