James Cameron Desperately Needs Avatar 2 To Break All-Time Box Office Record To 'Break Even'

Granted that James Cameron’s first Avatar film made history as the highest-grossing film, this raises speculation on whether its sequel, Avatar: Way of Water, will be equal its worth or not. Previously, it was reported that The Way of Water had a $250 million budget, and even James Cameron himself admits, to make the sequel all worth it financially, it would have to break the all-time box office record.

Speaking with GQ, film creator Cameron emphasizes how Avatar: Way of Water would need to reach third or at least fourth highest-grossing film in history ‘just to break even.’ Check out his full quote below:

“Very f***ing [expensive]. [This film represents] the worst business case in movie history. You have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

Considering how the initial trailer for Avatar: Way of Water appeared to have kept the director’s promise of stunning CGI, all that’s left for the sequel is its premiere to take on the final verdict from critics, fans, and other viewers.

Seeing how long Cameron had invested into this sequel, in spite of the many delays it faced, and the budget they had to put into it, it would only be fair for him to expect its higher return. In fact, even one of the Avatar 2 stars, Stephen Lang, supports the sequel’s turnout by commenting how ‘absolutely gorgeous’ it was working on set. For now, I guess we'll just have to wait and see once it hits theaters this year.

Avatar: Way of Water premieres on December 16, 2022.
