James Cameron Compares Avatar Sequels to Lord of the Rings

There is little doubt that Avatar: The Way of Water is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. After all, the production of the sequel had taken several years to the point that people began wondering if it will ever get made.

Luckily, James Cameron is determined to move forward with his films and he has huge plans for the growing franchise. The award-winning filmmaker has just compared his own Avatar movies to J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings book series!

2009's Avatar was a cinematic masterpiece that stands perfectly on its own but it was far from the only story that James Cameron wanted to tell. While speaking to Empire, he revealed that he had pitched more than just one film to 20th Century Fox back in the day.

"What I said to the Fox regime at the time was, 'I'll do it, but we've got to play a larger game here. I don't want to just do a movie and do a movie and do a movie. I want to tell a bigger story,'" Cameron said.

"I said, 'Imagine a series of novels like The Lord of the Rings existed, and we're adapting them.' Now, that was great in theory, but then I had to go create the frickin' novels from which to adapt it," he continued.

It's an interesting comparison considering that the Lord of the Rings trilogy is considered one of the most notable works in fantasy literature and the film adaptations did an excellent job in bringing it into life. Right now, we don't know what Avatar's bigger story is but if Cameron chooses to compare it to a true classic, then the new movies are truly something to look forward to.

Avatar: The Way of Water is the first of four sequels to the 2009 movie. It is scheduled for release on December 16, 2022.
