Even if you're unsure about yet another modern Ghostbusters film, you might look forward to the return of not one but many adorable and weird "Mini-Pufts." The trailers of Ghostbusters: Afterlife look stunning and might get you excited about ghost hunting whether or not you were a fan of the 1980s films or the 2016 reboot. But is the forthcoming film a horror film, a comedy, or both?
In the short blurb we currently have available, we read:
"When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind."
To the uninitiated, this might sound like the blurb of pretty much any haunted house horror movie that has been released in the last few decades. But of course, there is one difference: the Ghostbusters' legacy.
Is Ghostbusters: Afterlife a Horror Film?
To be fair, this depends on how easily you get scared. Since its early days, the Ghostbusters franchise has been just as much about fun as it has been about horror. The first trailer, which might remind you a bit of Stranger Thing and contemporary small-town horror, makes the film seem more serious and genuinely creepy than you would expect from a Ghostbusters film.
That was until the Mini-Pufts trailer came up.
Is Ghostbusters: Afterlife a Comedy?
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is dubbed as belonging to the Comedy and Fantasy genres in the IMDb entry of the film. You might also see it referred to as a "Supernatural Comedy." The latter seems like a fitting description since the supernatural tag encapsulates what horror elements the film might have.
Actor Finn Wolfhard, whom you might know from Stranger Things, explained in an interview that the film is both funny and scary, even if the first trailer seems to lean more towards the horror side.
Of course, the trailer wouldn't want to give away all its best humor so easily, and many jokes make much more sense in proper context, so we might have to watch the film when it's released, to understand the full extent of horror and comedy the Ghostbusters: Afterlife team has in store for us.
