Is Felicity Jones Playing Rey's Mom in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story?

One of the biggest questions raised out of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the question about Rey's parentage. Fans want to know who Rey parents are, where she came from, and how she ended up in Jakku. Most theories have been focused around the chance that Rey is related to a character introduced in the previous Star Wars films. But what if that's not the case, and that Rey's mother is actually someone we haven't met yet?

Today, Jyn Erso was introduced in the Star Wars universe via the first Rogue One: A Star Wars trailer released today, and several commenters are already saying that she could be the mother of Rey. But is it likely that they're related? Let's talk about this.

  1. There's a resemblance between Jyn and Rey

Since Luke Skywalker bears a resemblance to young Anakin, we can say that children  look like their parents in the galaxy far, far away. And if we look at Rey and Jyn, we could see that there's something of a resemblance: They're both brunettes with similar eyes. The comparison is superficial, but at the very least, we can say that their looks don't weigh against them being related. They also sound alike. In the trailer, Jyn doesn't speak much, but when she does, her accent is similar to Rey's. However, Rey spent most of her life without her parents, so this could be just a coincidence.

  2. But Rey Has The Force

In Rogue One, Jyn doesn't have a force. From what we've been told, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is not a story about Jedi. The characters are generally normal people who are not Force-sensitive, and they don't use lightsabers or move things with their minds.

However, this doesn't discount Jyn entirely, as Rey's father, could still be the one who passes on the affinity for The Force. It's possible that Jyn met Luke Skywalker at the post Death Star explosion party on Endor and both fell in love and ran off together. If that ever happened, Rey would likely be about 10 years older, but there's a lot of story left to be explored in the 30 years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens

  3. The Age and Timing Work

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary reveals that Rey was born approximately 11 years after the Battle of Endor. Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi happens four years after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. We still don't know exactly the age of Jyn Erso in the movie. Felicity Jones, the actress who plays her is 32, but Jyn might be younger. Daisy Ridley is a few years older than Rey. Even if Jyn is a younger character, this puts her giving birth later in life, around mid 40's. But we're using standard Earth human childbearing ages and lifespan to measure here, but we're talking about the galaxy far, far away, so who knows? Maybe humans can give birth until they're 80.

  4. So do you think Jyn is Rey's mother?
