Ernie Hudson is a Ghostbusters legend. To date, he has appeared as Winston Zeddemore in all the movies - except for the reboot Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016), of course, in which he plays a completely different character.

He even appeared in Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009), and also reprised his role as the character in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed (2022), an asymmetrical multiplayer game that was released on October 18.

He's set to return in next year's Ghostbusters 4 (working title), having played a significant role in Ghostbusters: Afterlife's post-credits scene, and now, in a new interview with SYFY WIRE, Hudson has shared his ideas for the new film.

But first, he seemed to cast some doubt over his appearance in the film, saying:

“Winston was set up in the last one to be an important part moving forward. So yeah, I’m excited by that. I think it’ll probably happen within the next few months. I’m pretty sure. So like everybody else, I’m waiting to see what the studio’s come up with and what they come to me with. Assuming they will come to me. In this business, I never take anything for granted.”

Hudson's comments might be a little confusing, as he recently told Comicbook.com he had read the script for Ghostbusters 4. Although he did then go on to say that the writers had committed to another draft.

It's entirely possible, though, that he's simply keeping details under wraps. Either way, in his interview with SYFY WIRE, he went on to explain his ideas for the upcoming sequel, which are very unique and interesting.

Here's what he said in full:

“There’s a reason why we ghost-bust. We go and trap the ghosts, and that’s kind of fun, but why are the ghosts wreaking havoc?” I’d like to see (Winston) explore, ‘We’re going to keep doing this, but there’s something bigger going on, that’s affecting our world.’ I’d like to see it tied into what’s going on in the world...

[continued]... I have my sort of ideas and theories. It kind of depends on how we look at ghosts, but they’re fun and cute, and we trap them and we throw them in a containment unit. But what is really going on? Because obviously, you can’t trap ghosts and just leave them there. I’d like to see it get a little bit more complicated. Still funny and all the above, but I think something else is going on. Hopefully, that’s something we’ll see, but in the meantime, it’s fun the way it is.”

Ernie Hudson and his onscreen counterpart are staple parts of any Ghostbusters movie (except for the 2016 reboot, which exists in a separate timeline). In other words, we simply can't imagine Ghostbusters without him.

So, here's to hoping that he'll be reprising his role as Winston Zeddemore in the yet-to-be-titled sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and that the filmmakers also take some of his ideas on board!
