How House of the Dragon Almost Got Shelved At HBO

Considering how George RR Martin still has an ongoing progress with his Game of Thrones book series, making a couple of spinoffs is not far-fetched at all.

In fact, that’s exactly when House of the Dragon came to fruition, focusing on the House of Targaryen.

Based on Martin’s Fire & Blood novel, the adaptation of the spinoff series tackles the Targaryen Civil War, hundreds of years before the events of the original HBO series.

While Martin still has a couple of spinoffs about to take place in the near future, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal revealed that HBO almost shelved the series previously.

See, Martin already had an initial lined-up list on which Game of Thrones spinoff series they should do next, which introduced the danger of House of the Dragon getting canceled before filming began.

“[House of the Dragon] was the spinoff that was the most important to him and he had been unhappy with how development had gone on it.” Showrunner Condal said in a recent interview with IndieWire.

Condal then added: “HBO was going to shelve it and he didn’t want them to do that. He wanted me to take another shot at it.”

Luckily, Condal’s pitch and running the series by storm earned the HBO show acclaimed appraisals, getting a greenlit Season 3 ahead of Season 2's release.

The next Game of Thrones spinoff Martin has in mind is a prequel this time, and that is the Dunk & Egg spinoff.

The Dunk & Egg spinoff has been retitled to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which has been ordered at HBO to begin development.

This prequel story will follow the young knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his little squire Egg.

Set about 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, it is also likely we’ll be meeting original characters from the mothership series in this spinoff.

For now, House of the Dragon Season 2 is still filming amid the WGA strike and is expected to premiere sometime in 2024.
