The first season of the series covers a portion of George R. R. Martin's novel, Fire & Blood, on which it is based.

House of the Dragon Season 1 portrays the events that eventually lead to the civil war within the Targaryen family called the Dance of the Dragons, where two Targaryens stake their claim on the throne and battle it out after King Viserys dies.

Season 1 ended with the event that kickstarted the Dance of the Dragons, and showrunner Ryan Condal said that Season 2 will "pick up where we left off." Condal also said:

“This series is very much about a house tearing itself apart from within. Now that all those pieces have been set on the board, I’m really excited to tell the next chapter, to see what happens now that Viserys is gone and no longer keeping a lid on things.”
