House of the Dragon: Matt Smith Prepares for Battle in Full Targaryen Armor in New Photo

There is little doubt that a war is coming in House of the Dragon. After all, the Game of Thrones spin-off series is set during the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. So it's no surprise that a new still from the show features Matt Smith's character Daemon Targaryen getting ready for battle in full armor.

The new House of the Dragon still was shared by Empire and it shows Daemon Targaryen in full armor as he walks down a dark hall. Although it is unclear where he is headed, we're guessing that this might be a shot showing Daemon marching into battle to fight for the Iron Throne.

It has been clear that Daemon Targaryen is more than just a spoiled prince. In George R.R. Martin's novel Fire and Blood, Daemon is depicted as a dragonrider who rides the equally temperamental dragon Caraxes. We already got a glimpse at Daemon's mount in the House of the Dragon trailer so there is little doubt that these two will be a huge part of the action later this month.

Daemon seems to get along with Caraxes but the one character he doesn't agree with is Otto Hightower. Rhys Ifans, who will play the Hand of the King in the series, seems to share Otto's opinion of Daemon, calling him “the king’s kryptonite.”

“[Daemon is] volatile, violent and impulsive. Any influence he has on the king is detrimental to the status quo,” Ifans said. It certainly sounds like Daemon and Otto will be butting heads often in the Game of Thrones prequel series.

House of the Dragon will also star Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, and Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen. The series will premiere on HBO on August 21, 2022.
