Yesterday, the 80th Golden Globe Awards ceremony had its live telecast where the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) awarded the best films and TV shows of 2022. As expected, it was a very competitive race as the nominations were consists of acclaimed projects from last year, but only one took the gold in each category.
Fortunately, the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon took home the Best Drama Series award for its freshman season. They were able to beat the other shows such as Better Call Saul, The Crown, Ozark, and Severance.
Interestingly enough, back when Game of Thrones was competing in the race, it only won one out of the eight nominations that it received throughout the show's run which is for Peter Dinklage's performance in the first season. It never won the Best Drama Series award in its history.
Emma D'Arcy also received a nomination for their performance as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Best Actress in a Drama Series category. However, Zendaya ended up winning for her performance in Euphoria, another HBO series.
This is certainly impressive for the show's first foray into its awards run since they were able to bag the top prize in their debut season and it sets up a path for potentially receiving more awards in upcoming ceremonies. It also tells us that the show stood out for the voters last year.
The show's win has also been considered a surprise for some considering that Game of Thrones doesn't have a great history at the Golden Globes. Now, it looks like House of the Dragon was able to break the "curse" with this win and it would be interesting to see if they'll be able to bag more awards in future seasons.
Some of the big winners in the television categories are Best Musical or Comedy series winner Abbott Elementary (which also bagged the most awards in the night) and Best Limited or Anthology Series winner The White Lotus.
