With the recent shocking cancellation of the Batgirl movie despite already being in post-production, there have been concerns about the status of the other DC projects that are still in the works. Fortunately, it looks like most of them now have survived the ax including the long-in-the-works Green Lantern series.
In a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter regarding the cancellation of the Strange Adventures anthology series, they confirmed that they heard from their sources that the Green Lantern series on HBO Max is still in the works with Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine remain attached to star.
So why is the project taking so long to head into production? According to the report, the producers are taking their time in developing the effects-heavy series in order "to get it right." It's also going to be the priciest project yet for Berlanti Productions, the team behind the series. Superman & Lois director Lee Toland Krieger is on board to helm the first two episodes.
The project's encouraging status comes after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed last week that they are working on a ten-year plan to reshape the DC franchise. It is unknown yet whether the series will actually factor into the aforementioned plan.
It is great to hear that the series is still in the works since a lot of fans have been looking forward to seeing it ever since it was announced and considering that there hasn't been a great live-action adaptation of the iconic hero yet following the critically-panned 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds.
It remains to be seen if the project will be able to make it into production by next year. Considering that it's still in its long pre-production phase, it looks like we still need to wait a little longer before its release as long as Warner Bros. Discovery will not pull the plug.
