It's no surprise that Grey's Anatomy will end sooner rather than later, but Season 18 Episode 16, titled Should I Stay Or Should I Go, may have just guaranteed that Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 will be the final season.

In the most recent Grey's Anatomy episode, one detail regarding Meredith's decision may have just confirmed that not only will the show be ended soon, but that it will also be stopped next season.

Meredith leaving could signal Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 would close show for good

Meredith realized it was time to leave Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital after Miranda Bailey's (Chandra Wilson) outburst to her in the last Grey's Anatomy episode, and she accepted David Hamilton's (Peter Gallagher) offer to work at the Grey Center in Minnesota. Meredith's decision, however, came at the same time that Grey Sloan's residency program was placed on probation, prompting many of Meredith's coworkers to label her as disloyal.

Miranda, Richard (James Pickens Jr.), Catherine (Debbie Allen), and even Maggie (Kelly McCreary) were furious with Meredith and letting her know about it in Should I Stay Or Should I Go, especially since the news about the residency program on probation had just been made public.

The way the storyline was presented, it's evident that Grey Sloan's probationary residency program will be the biggest hurdle for Grey’s Anatomy Season 19. Meredith's change of heart over her decision in the most recent Grey's Anatomy episode could possibly lead to it being Grey Sloan Memorial's final challenge.

An opportunity to end on a high note

Nick (Scott Speedman) goes to her residence at the end of the episode to persuade her to stay in Seattle. Meredith eventually consented after Nick made it apparent that they would only be in Seattle long enough to rescue Grey Sloan's residency program, despite her righteous fury at his offer.

Nick's offer to stay with Meredith in Seattle will extend Meredith's tenure at Grey Sloan just long enough to resolve the probation issue, allowing Grey's Anatomy to end on a high note, with the program saved and Meredith Grey lauded as a hero in that hospital once more.

Given that saving the residency program would most likely be a season-long narrative, Grey's Anatomy Season 19 could be the final season.

Grey's Anatomy respects Meredith Grey's character by setting strong limitations for how long she will stay in Seattle. It also increases the likelihood that Grey's Anatomy Season 19 will be the series' final season.
