A different shōnen series steals the throne on My Anime List's top anime of all time!

Gintama: The Final has taken away Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood's number one spot on My Anime List's top anime series. The movie currently has a score of 9.17 out of 10, barely surpassing Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which has a score of 9.16 out of 10.

Gintama is a sci-fi comedy shōnen manga series created by Hideaki Sorachi. Set in an alternate version of Edo where aliens rule over the land, it follows the chaotic trio of Gintoki Sakata, Shinpachi Shimura, and Kagura. They are known as Yorozuya, a freelancing business that takes any type of job. The manga was serialized from 2003 to 2019. The anime adaptation was first released in 2006 and aired until 2018.

Crunchyroll describes the series as:

"In a world where aliens have invaded Edo Period Japan, skyscrapers, trains, and motor bikes have replaced the simple life of Earth inhabitants. One man, however, still carries the soul of a samurai, Gintoki Sakata, otherwise known as Yorozuya Gin-san. As reckless as he is, Gintoki carries his own resolve and is ready to take on any challenge with his fellow companions."

Gintama has gained a solid fanbase through the ages and is famous for its crazy humor and over-the-top storytelling. A lot of the series' jokes tend to poke at usual shōnen tropes and cliches while also making fun of other Weekly Shōnen Jump titles such as One Piece. The series also loves to break the fourth wall often, adding even more fun to the comedic aspect of the story.
