G.I. Joe Retaliation Director Reacts to Henry Golding Landing Snake Eyes Role

News came out yesterday that Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding was in talks to play the lead role in the G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes, and what's interesting is, the director of the last Joe film, Jon M. Chu, was the same director at the helm of Crazy Rich Asians. Chu has just taken to Twitter to comment on his CRA star moving on to the G.I. Joe franchise:

I'll admit, it's a very weird coincidence that Golding would be already connected to the Snake Eyes role via Chu. I guess you would never imagine that the guy behind the Joe sequel would be the very same one at the helm of Crazy Rich Asians.

While we don't have any specific details on the Snake Eyes film, it's said that it will be a prequel which will focus on Snake Eyes' origin before he was in line with the Joes. With Golding landing the part, it looks like the franchise is going to be aiming for a reboot. In the original Joe films, Snake Eyes was played by Ray Park, and some flashback scenes clearly portrayed him as a Caucasian boy. With Snake Eyes now being Asian, it looks like the movie is going to pull a Bumblebee and be a reboot/prequel for G.I. Joe.

We don't know when we're going to get another G.I. Joe movie, but Snake Eyes is aiming to hit theater on Oct. 16, 2020.
