It's fair to say that Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) has put Ghostbusters back on the map, as Ghostbusters Day (June 8) came with news that a brand-new Ghostbusters animated series is in development at Netflix.

Ghostbusters is no stranger to animated shows, as many fans will no doubt remember The Real Ghostbusters (1986 - 1991) and Extreme Ghostbusters (1997), both of which have inspired several lines of merchandise over the years.

The original animated show focused on Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore, and Ray Stantz, as well as Janine Melnitz and Slimer, as they busted ghosts across Manhattan following the original 1984 film.

Extreme Ghostbusters served as a sequel of sorts, with Egon Spengler returning to manage a new team of Ghostbusters, including the fan-favorite Kylie Griffin, but the show is more adult than its family-friendly predecessor.

Now, there's something strange coming to Netflix. But what can we expect from the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series? Well, you don't need to call Netflix to find out everything there is to know about the project...

Ghostbusters Animated Series Cast

While no cast members have been announced, it's entirely possible that actors from the movies will return to lend their vocal talents, should their respective characters show up in the new animated series.

With the likes of Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykoyd both reprising their roles as Winston Zeddemore and Ray Stantz in the upcoming video game Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed (2022), this is entirely possible.

We can only assume that the new animated series will be canon, which makes sense with Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman involved. So it's even possible that even the likes of McKenna Grace (Phoebe) will make a return.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which is currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray, stars McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard (Trevor), Carrie Coon (Callie Spengler), Logan Kim (Podcast), Paul Rudd (Gary Grooberson), and Celeste O'Conner (Lucky).

Ghostbusters Animated Series Plot

Although a synopsis is yet to be confirmed, working out the premise for any Ghostbusters project isn't all that tricky, because the clue is really in the name. And we only need to look at past projects for an idea.

Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters II (1989), Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016), and Ghostbusters: Afterlife all revolve around the same basic principle - a team of people battling a rising supernatural force while they capture ghosts.

The same can be said about both animated shows The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters, and not to mention all the many video games as well as IDW Publishing's long-running Ghostbusters comic book series.

With all of that said, with Ghostbusters 4 recently confirmed by Sony, there's really no telling what any future Ghostbusters project will involve. But here's to hoping that the series will continue to take a break from the Big Apple.
