Game of Thrones is still remembered as a truly great show although people are divided about how it ended. Nevertheless, George R.R. Martin continues to stand by the series adaptation of his books. The A Song of Ice and Fire author has just addressed the backlash and questions how fandoms can turn "toxic" so easily.
George R.R. Martin recently spoke to The Independent where he talked about the negative reaction to the last few seasons of Game of Thrones.
"I don't understand it, you know. OK, you love a show, you love a character. What's the worst... it's either going to be a good show or a bad show or a mediocre show. Some episodes are good, some are bad. Why are people getting so crazy about it, you know?" Martin asked.
"I don’t understand how people can come to hate so much something that they once loved," he continued. "If you don’t like a show, don’t watch it! How has everything become so toxic?"
Game of Thrones lasted for eight seasons but people have pointed out that the series started to lose focus in the sixth season and things began to go downhill from there. Season 8 is said to be a disaster although some of the cast and crew continue to defend the show.
Although it is too late for Game of Thrones to get a do-over (there is still a petition begging for a Season 8 remake), there is still a chance for the franchise to redeem itself through the upcoming prequel series. House of the Dragon could avoid the mistakes made by its predecessors and hopefully, appease the fandom.
House of the Dragon is set 300 years before the events in Game of Thrones and will follow the powerful Targaryen family. The series will premiere on HBO in August 2022.
