GameStop Defends Its Outrageous Decision to Continue Operations Despite COVID-19 Lockdown

GameStop drew a whole lot of flack when it decided to keep operations running despite the government's enforced lockdown made to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The videogame and electronics retailer has been forcing its employees to come to work to keep its business running, explaining to the public that it considers itself one of the essential businesses named by the government. Businesses that fall under this category might be strictly limited to supermarkets, grocers, pharmacies, and healthcare facilities, but GameStop strongly believes that it should be considered an essential business because the products that it carries help "enable and enhance our customers' experience in working from home."

Netizens have responded strongly to GameStop's decision to keep its operations running. Not only is GameStop going against the lockdown, but it's also risking the safety of its employees who are forced to come in to work just so that GameStop can continue with its business.

Despite all of the criticism that it's received online, GameStop refuses to close down, saying that the company is working hard to provide customers and workers "the safest environment possible."

Taking to Twitter, the retailer shared a list of specific actions that it has taken to make sure that it doesn't jeopardize the health of its customers and its employees.

"We are working diligently during this unprecedented time to provide our customers & associates with the safest environment possible. Please see below for details on new changes we are enacting," the company wrote in its post.

The post has been met with absolute outrage and derision. Netizens have been blasting the tweet, telling GameStop to close its stores and to pay its employees.

Seeing how foolhardy GameStop has been, we wonder whether the backlash against GameStop's most recent post might get the company to change its mind and shut down operations for the safety of its workers and the public.

Let's wait and see.
