Final Fantasy VII Remake Will Remove Some Materia and Introduce New Ones

Final Fantasy VII Remake is going to be a nostalgic trip for many, though it is also expected to have a ton of differences from the original. That's pretty obvious, given the attention to detail put into the graphics, along with the brand-new battle system. Materia, which was a huge part of the original game, will also be going through some changes though they won't be huge.

During an interview with Famitsu (via Game Informer), director Tetsuya Nomura confirmed that Materia would still be in the game but that some of the original ones will not be returning. This is likely due to how some of them won't work with a more active combat system, which makes a lot of sense. What these new Materia will be hasn't been revealed but we will probably get a preview of them sooner or later.

The trailer did show Jessie giving Cloud some Materia, which will probably be his Thunder skill. Cloud actually starts out with that in the original game and is fairly useful against the first boss, which will likely play a part in the upcoming remake. Hopefully, the new Materia are cool and they supplement the Summons, which were confirmed in the game's pre-order material.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be coming out on PS4 next year, on March 3, 2020.
