Expect 4 times the action and 4 times the fun in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie - Fantastic Four!

Marvel first announced in July 2019 that the First Family would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now that we caught a glimpse of a possible Mr. Fantastic in Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, here is everything we know about the Fantastic Four's release date, cast members, plot, and more to keep you going until the release.

Fantastic Four is Joining the MCU Soon

As the need to learn more about the new Fantastic Four version has increased, MCU fans have gotten more excited about the possibility of Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben joining forces with The Avengers or X-Men.

Luckily, we don't have to go any longer without any news, for Kevin Feige previously confirmed that Fantastic Four is already in development as potentially a part of Marvel's Phase Four.

Fantastic Four first appeared in comic books in November 1961, telling the story of a team of four adventurers who took part in experimental space exploration.

After being exposed to cosmic radiation, they gained powers that they used to save the world and the universe.

Dr. Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, can shapeshift by stretching, deforming, or compressing his body parts. Sue Storm, aka Invisible Woman, can turn, well, invisible. She eventually learns how to use force fields. Reed and Sue get married.

Sue's brother, Johnny Storm, also called the Human Torch, can engulf his entire body in flames, fly, control, and absorb fire nearby.

The last member of the team was Benjamin Grimm, whose whole body turned into stone, giving him superhuman strength and endurance.

The Fantastic Four Joins the MCU

Fantastic Four was initially supposed to kickstart Marvel Phase 6 by November 2024, as announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2022.

The movie was first announced during the San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, but production may have been delayed because of COVID-19 and the SAG-AFTRA strike.

However, in recent news, Fantastic Four's theatrical release is scheduled for May 2, 2025.

Fantastic Four Could Kickstart MCU Phase 6

Fans expected Fantastic Four to be a part of Phase 4 because it was initially announced during the 2020 Disney Investor Day, but it seems Marvel Studios has other plans.

Fantastic Four may set up the premise for the shows and films in Phase 6. Reed Richards, Sue Storm, John Storm, and Ben Grimm may have gotten their powers through an incursion, given the events in the current shows within the MCU.

There have been no official announcements about the cast of the new MCU Fantastic Four yet, but here are a few potential cast members we could expect from the reboot:

WARNING: This part of the article contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!

John Krasinski and Emily Blunt

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness gave a sneak peek of who could be Mr. Fantastic. We will be talking about the premise of the movie, but we will try to keep the spoilers at a minimum.

When Dr. Strange arrived at Earth-838, he was captured and presented to the Illuminati, a collective of superheroes who used to include Dr. Strange from that reality.

The members of the Illuminati are Peggy Carter's Captain Carter (as played by Hayley Atwell), Mordo (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), and Maria Rambeau's Captain Marvel (Lashana Lynch). It also included Black Bolt (Anson Mount) and Professor X (Patrick Stewart).

Perhaps the character who received the most applause when revealed was John Krasinski, who played Mr. Fantastic.

John Krasinski has always been a fan favorite to play The Smartest Man Alive.

He has expressed that he would be game to play the character in a Fantastic Four movie, and fans have been holding on to this ever since.

There have even been requests for his wife, actress Emily Blunt (famous for her movies Edge of Tomorrow and Mary Poppins), to play Sue Storm.

Is his cameo in Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness confirmation that John Krasinski will play Mr. Fantastic?

If it was, the biggest issue they would have to address is his death when the Scarlet Witch turned him into elastic noodles. However, this would have been Earth-838's Mr.

Fantastic, so does this mean there is a Mr. Fantastic in Earth-616? Spider-Man No Way Home showed us that different actors might play the same character because of three different Spider-Mans played by Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire.

Does this mean we may see another actor play Mr. Fantastic? Well, according to Krasinski himself in an interview with The Wrap:

"It's totally insane. To be in a room with all those people, and again to be a part of that narrative is crazy. But yeah, being turned into spaghetti wasn't my end goal in life as far as how it goes in the Marvel Universe, but you know what? It was fun, nonetheless."

Penn Badgley and Elizabeth Lail

By August 2022, we hear more casting rumors for Fantastic Four. Word on the street is that the studio recently approached Penn Badgley (You) about playing the Smartest Man Alive for the movie, but there have been no confirmations so far.

As for actresses who could play Sue Storm, there have been many names thrown around like Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Kirby, and Phillipa Soo, but the favorite so far is Elizabeth Lail, who already worked with Badgley in the series, You.

Other Potential Fantastic Four Casting Rumors

Kylo Ren star Adam Driver was previously rumored to be the frontrunner to play Reed Richards. At one point, Driver was even claimed to have already been cast to lead the reboot.

This, however, was later debunked on The Hot Mic podcast:

"This contradicts some stuff we've put out there in the past, but... this comes from someone apparently working on the Fantastic Four movie. They said that Adam Driver was never really engaged in this. They sent Adam the script a while back and he said that he couldn't connect with the character on the page and he passed very early on."

Chris Evans, who previously played the role of The Human Torch in the Fantastic Four franchise, told MTV News that he would love to play Johnny Storm in the reboot:

"Wouldn't that be great? No one's ever come to me about that. I mean, I don't exactly look the same anymore. I really love that character. Aren't they doing something now with Fantastic Four?"

Normal People's Paul Mescal was also reportedly offered the role of Johnny Storm, alongside Stranger Things' Joe Keery, The Perks of Being a Wallflower's Logan Lerman, and The Boys' Chase Stokes.

Sue Storm Casting Rumors

As for the other possible Sue Storm castings, this includes Amanda Seyfried (The Dropout), Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things), Melissa Benoist (Supergirl), Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World, Black Mirror), Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Kristen Bell (The Good Place), and Mila Kunis (Family Guy).

Kunis, on the other hand, shut down these rumors when she went on The Late Late Show with James Corden, "Apparently, if you go to lunch with somebody that is also in the industry, you then start working together, according to the internet. I don't want to get in trouble with The Mouse, so none of you will find out."

It was in May 2023 when DanielRPK claimed that Margot Robbie had reportedly been offered to play the role of Sue Storm.

As of writing, these are all but rumors and speculations, considering that Fantastic Four is only set to begin filming in early 2024.

Jon Watts was first brought into the project to direct The Fantastic Four movie after directing the Spider-Man MCU films.

However, we recently learned that he had to opt-out. There have been rumors that John Krasinski will be directing Fantastic Four instead of playing the lead role, but this has not been confirmed either.

Matt Shakman, who is best known for helming the WandaVision series, is set to direct the Fantastic Four reboot.

According to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, Avatar 2: The Way of Water and Snowpiercer writer Josh Friedman will be penning the script, replacing Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer as the writers for the reboot.

Fantastic Four Director Confirmed During the D23 Expo 2022

Many fans waited for updates and announcements about Fantastic Four during the annual D23 Expo event and they were not disappointed.

During the Marvel panel, we learned that the final director for the film was Matt Shakman after he opted out of directing a Star Trek movie.

Fantastic Four

As of writing, the possible plot of the Fantastic Four movie has not been released yet. However, because this is the first Fantastic Four movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the chances are that it will be an origin story.

The movie may show us how Dr. Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Benjamin Grimm became the Fantastic Four.

The movie could also introduce us to the villains of the Fantastic Four franchise.

The main antagonist for the Fantastics is Doctor Doom, who is considered one of the smartest supervillains in the entire Marvel Comic Book universe. The movie may also show us how he came to be and how the rivalry between him and the Fantastic Four started.

According to Ant-Man director Peyton Reed, though, he had previously pitched that the Fantastic Four reboot could take place in the 1960s, when the heroes were first introduced in their comics origin.

As for Shakman, though, he told Collider:

"I wish I could be specific. I wish I could say more. But we are doing things very differently from a story standpoint, from an approach to the filmmaking standpoint, that really fits the material. I wish I could say more. I would love to, but I can't. But I think it's going to be unlike anything you've seen before, and certainly unlike anything at Marvel that you've seen before."

MCU's Fantastic Four will be available first in theatres. After the movie has completed its theatrical window, it may start streaming on selected sites, or quite possibly, Disney Plus, since every Marvel movie and series are available to stream there.

The Fantastic Four is a hallmark franchise that ushered in many of the best superheroes we know today. It was the first collaboration between comic book legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, which may explain why they are called the Fantastic Family.
