Every Comic Book Movie Coming In 2018

2017 was a pretty big year for comic book movies, but from the look of it, 2018 is going to be even bigger. From animated to live-action, Marvel to DC, superhero to non-superhero, we’re currently looking at a whopping 10 theatrical comic-book-inspired films this year, which speaks volumes about the ever-growing popularity of what was once considered a niche genre.

We here at Epicstream want to help you keep track of what films are coming out and when so here’s your guide to every comic book movie coming in 2018:

  1. Black Panther (Feb. 16)

After his breakout performance in Captain America: Civil War, Chadwick Boseman will reprise his role as the King of Wakanda – T’Challa/Black Panther – as the character gets his long-awaited first solo film. Based on the trailers and TV spots, the film seems to be heading in the right direction as far as faithfully honoring and exploring Black Panther’s rich history and his significance in comic book culture. Additionally, it will be interesting to see if the film picks up on the unresolved thread from Civil War regarding Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier. Although Sebastian Stan hasn’t been confirmed for Black Panther, he still has many films left on his nine-picture contract, so it’s entirely possible that the studio is keeping a surprise appearance from the Winter Soldier under wraps for now.

  2. Avengers: Infinity War (May 4)

There has been so much buzz surrounding Avengers: Infinity War, as well as its still-untitled sequel. Initially, the project was supposed to be a two-part mega movie. Then, it was rumored that the project would feature upwards of 60 characters, with speculation that the heroes from Marvel’s Netflix series would make finally join the ranks of their big screen counterparts. One thing is certain, though: both films promise to serve as a culmination of everything the MCU has built thus far. For Infinity War, we’ll finally see the MCU’s Earth-based heroes meet the protectors of the cosmic side of the MCU, with the Guardians of the Galaxy slated to make an appearance in the film to lend a hand in the fight against Thanos, who looks as imposing as ever in the first trailer.

  3. Deadpool 2 (May 18)

While we know next to nothing about the plot, it’s pretty safe to say fans have at least somewhat of an idea what to expect from Deadpool 2. In case you’re unfamiliar with the Merc with a Mouth’s… unique… brand of fourth-wall-breaking humor, here’s 20th Century Fox’s “official” synopsis for the film: “After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.” Need we say more?

  4. Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6)

After years in development hell and the departure of director Edgar Wright, Ant-Man still managed to captivate audiences, particularly due to Paul Rudd’s humorous take on the pint-sized hero, Scott Lang/Ant-Man. That being said, it came as no surprise when Marvel Studios greenlit a sequel, and thankfully, the post-credits teaser that shows Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne get a suit of her own will pay off, as the sequel has been titled Ant-Man and the Wasp. The set photos look promising, and it’s likely that a trailer will be on the way relatively soon, considering the film is due this summer. Let’s just hope director Peyton Reed is able to make lightning strike twice because from what we know, Ant-Man still had some traces of Edgar Wright’s original vision when it was released.

  5. Alita: Battle Angel (July 20)

Adapting "the spine story" of Yukito Kishiro's original manga, with a specific focus on the first four books, Alita: Battle Angel is a film that’s been in various stages of development since as early as 2000. Now, after countless delays, producers James Cameron and Jon Landau, along with director Robert Rodriguez, are finally bringing the titular cyborg warrior to the big screen. The first trailer was polarizing, to say the least, with many fans taking to social media to mock Rosa Salazar’s Alita look – specifically the giant “anime” eyes, which look downright bizarre in live-action. Still, there appears to be a decent story buried beneath the distracting visuals, so hopefully, that’s what Alita: Battle Angel is ultimately remembered for in the long run.

  6. Teen Titans Go! to the Movies (July 27)

Depending on your personal taste, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies probably falls somewhere between “who even asked for this?” and “why did it take so long for us to get this?” Based on the Cartoon Network series, which offers a comedic take on the classic DC Comics team, the film appears to center around the Teen Titans’ metatextual response to the rising popularity of superhero movies, with Robin determined to become a star. Plus, in true Teen Titans Go! fashion, the trailer contains a 15-second fart joke, so… there’s that to look forward to.

  7. Venom (Oct. 5)

A Venom standalone movie has long been rumored by Sony, until – seemingly out of nowhere – it was announced that not only was the project alive and well but that the film would be released in 2018. Production is now well underway, as Sony is moving fast to establish its own Marvel film universe. Venom, which is expected to have an R-rating, is currently listed as an Action/Horror/Sci-Fi film, which could mean we’ll get to see the outer space origin of the symbiote that was so sorely missing from Spider-Man 3. The actual plot is unknown at this time, but we do know that longtime Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are overseeing the project, and with Tom Hardy in the lead role, hopefully, this will be the start of a promising new cinematic universe.

  8. X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Nov. 2)

20th Century Fox already has one failed attempt to faithfully adapt the classic Dark Phoenix Saga under its belt, but this year, the studio will give it another go under the direction of franchise veteran Simon Kinberg. The new era of X-Men films (starting with First Class) have varied in quality, but none of them have been outright “bad,” so there’s little reason to doubt X-Men: Dark Phoenix just yet. Besides, there have been rumblings that the film is actually going to be a two-parter, which means the story will likely receive the breathing room it truly needs, given the density of the source material.

  9. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Dec. 14)

We’ve known for several years that a CG-animated Spider-Man film featuring Miles Morales was on the way, but the reveal of the Into the Spider-Verse subtitle seems to hint that perhaps we’ll see other alternate-Earth versions of the friendly neighborhood web-slinger. After all, Spider-Verse was a 2014 Marvel Comics storyline in which virtually every incarnation of Spider-Man, from comics to animation, faced off against the super-villain Morlun. Still, the trailer looks promising, so let’s just hope Miles is able to receive the screen time he deserves, rather than being overshadowed by too many other spideys.

  10. Aquaman (Dec. 21)

Given the DCEU’s divisive track record, the fact that Aquaman will be the final comic book movie of 2018 might actually be a good thing… Or maybe a bad thing... It’s actually hard to say. In any case, Jason Momoa still delivered an excellent performance in the critically panned Justice League, and it will be great to see the character fully fleshed out in his own solo film. From what little we know so far, the movie will be something of an origin story in which Arthur realizes his birthright as King of Atlantis, and with a star-studded supporting cast at his side, Momoa’s journey to the throne should be an incredible ride.
