While Summer 2022 doesn’t have as many new shows, it does bring lots of highly anticipated sequels. Among them, it seems Made in Abyss Season 2 and Overlord IV are the current frontrunners of the Summer 2022 anime season.
Following the release of their first episodes last July 6 for Made in Abyss and July 5 for Overlord, the two shows currently have fairly high initial scores.
On MyAnimeList, Made in Abyss Season 2 has a score of 8.76 based on scores by over 8,000 users. Meanwhile, Overlord IV currently has a score of 8.29 based on over 14,000 user ratings.
Aside from their high scores, the two shows are also the most popular when it comes to discussions on Reddit. In the recent r/anime weekly recap, Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 1 and Overlord IV Episode 1 are the top two in terms of upvotes and comments.
Made in Abyss Season 2 (officially entitled Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun) is the long-awaited follow-up to the 2017 anime and the Made in Abyss movie.
Given the popularity and great reception of the first season, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that Made in Abyss Season 2 is a frontrunner of Summer 2022.
Meanwhile, Overlord IV is the fourth season of the popular isekai anime series which is based on the Overlord light novel series by Kugane Maruyama.
While it has been nearly four years since the release of Overlord Season 3, the franchise has managed to retain its popularity.
Aside from the light novels continuing to release over the years, Overlord has also received a game adaptation.
The series was also part of Kadokawa’s crossover Isekai Quartet anime series which features characters from other Kadokawa isekai series, including KonoSuba, Re:Zero, and more.
Right now, it’s a bit too early to call either of these the anime of the season. But given their popularity and high initial scores, it’s fair to say that Made in Abyss Season 2 and Overlord IV are shaping up to be the must-watch shows of Summer 2022.
