Emily Blunt and The Rock to Co-Star as Superheroes in Ball and Chain

Emily Blunt and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson are set to star in Disney's Jungle Cruise later this year, but the two are apparently teaming up again for a superhero film this time.

Deadline reports that Blunt and Johnson are attached to play a bickering superhero couple for the film called Ball and Chain. Here's the description of the original 1999 comic:

Edgar and Mallory Bulson have decided to throw in the towel. That was the plan anyway, until a mysterious meteor bathed the battling couple in extraterrestrial energies that gave them super-powers. Will their newfound abilities be enough to make their marriage work?

The script will come from Emily V. Gordon (The Big Sick) and is being produced by Seven Bucks. The movie is currently undergoing a bidding war between several studios, but Netflix is looking to be the winner down the line.

When news of the film first came out, some thought that it was kind of a reverse-Hancock where the heroes' powers only worked when they were in sync. No doubt, it's going to be a comedy film, and I expect there to be several jabs at the current superhero movie climate.

As far as casting goes, I don't really know much about the chemistry between Blunt and Johnson yet, and I'm kind of waiting for Jungle Cruise to come out so I can form a proper opinion. Just by looks alone, I think it would be better to have someone not so large opposite Blunt, because as it stands, Johnson can be a bit distracting when he's beside her.

Then again, that's just my opinion.

Catch Johnson and Blunt in Disney's Jungle Cruise which comes out July 30, 2021.
