The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has unveiled the nominations for this year's film awards. The science-fiction epic Dune leads with an impressive record of 11 nominations followed by The Power of the Dog with 8, Belfast with 6, and Licorice Pizza, No Time to Die, and West Side Story with 5 each.
Dune's nominations include the top prize Best Film where it will be competing with other films such as Belfast, Don't Look Up, Licorice Pizza, and The Power of the Dog. It's also nominated in other categories such as Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hair, Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Best Special Visual Effects.
The Best Animated Film category includes films such as Flee, Encanto, Luca, and The Mitchell vs. the Machines. The Best Special Visual Effects will have some of the major blockbusters from last year competing for the prize which are the aforementioned Dune, Free Guy, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, The Matrix Resurrections, and No Time to Die.
Some MCU actors also earned nominations in the acting categories including Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), Mahershala Ali (Swan Song), and Tessa Thompson (Passing). Locke & Key star Emilia Jones also received a nomination for her breakthrough performance in CODA. Outlander star Caitriona Balfe and X-Men alumn Kodi Smit-McPhee also earned nominations for their supporting performances in Belfast and The Power of the Dog, respectively.
It is great to hear that these films and performances were recognized by the British film industry, especially Dune earning 11 nominations which showed that there is a lot of love for the science-fiction epic, particularly in the technical/craft categories. This is also the last major awards ceremony that unveiled their nominations before the Oscars which is set to announce their nominees this Tuesday, February 8.

The winners for the 2022 BAFTA Film Awards will be announced during its in-person ceremony hosted by Rebel Wilson on March 13.
