Drew Barrymore's Scream Character May Return In Scream VII

Do you remember those first 10 minutes of the original Scream (1996), in which Drew Barrymore's character Casey Becker is absolutely brutally killed by Ghostface? Well, turns out she could be back for Scream VII...

Ever since the theory that Scream's Ghostface Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) could still be alive started spinning, and that he would show up in this year's Scream VI (2023), fans have been wondering who else might have survived.

While it remains to be seen whether or not Stu did survive (disappointingly, this didn't turn out to be the case in the latest sequel, though it absolutely should have), fans are now turning their attention to another OG character.

"Character" is a strong word for someone who's "offed" in the first 10 minutes of the first film, though, but her death is the most unforgettable so far.

Drew Barrymore's Casey Becker is the first Ghostface victim - on screen, at least, as the real honor goes to Maureen Prescott (Lynn McRee).

But now, the possibility of Casey Becker having survived the most insanely brutal stabbing just increased from zero to, well, something.

Before we go any further, though, let's remind ourselves exactly what happened to Casey Becker once Ghostface caught up with her in the yard.

She's stabbed near, or perhaps even in, the heart. Seconds later, she takes a knife to the side of the neck, rendering her unable to call for her parents.

Once Ghostface gets her back on the ground, he repeatedly stabs her, though the camera cuts away to reveal that Casey has removed his mask.

Then, she's dragged along the yard letting out nothing but blood-curdling groans, before her parents find her hanging from a tree, with her steaming guts on the wrong side of her torso.

Casey Becker was absolutely, undoubtedly, and irreversibly killed in Scream. Are we in agreement on that? Okay, good.

But apparently this may no longer be the case, and Casey may even end up returning for Scream VII!

Last month, on The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress' co-host Ross Matthew suggested her unfortunate Scream character could have survived.

Here's what Barrymore said in response, sparking a wave of fan-theories:

"It's funny. I've never thought of it this way, but I'm pretty sure a C-section is comparable to what happened to her. Like, literally. And I'm here! I'm fine! So, maybe Casey Becker will be okay. With good writing, you can make anything happen."

Obviously, her words should be taken with a huge pinch of salt - after all, this is simply her very own fun theory and nothing more.

With that said, we couldn't disagree more than bringing Casey Becker back would be "good writing" - quite the opposite, in fact.

But now, Scream VI writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick have thrown in their two cents on this new theory.

"I don't even want to," Vanderbilt said. "Listen, her liver was in the mailbox. Didn't they find her liver in the mailbox? I'm not a medical doctor but, you know."

Busick jokingly responded by saying, "Look, one word: Cyborg."

While the pair are obviously fooling around, this will no doubt lend to the fan theory that Casey Becker may actually still be alive within the Scream universe, and could return to the fold in Scream VII.

You only really need to look at Scream VI to see just how far away from itself the series has gotten, as the characters take "plot armor" to a whole new level.

Now, anything is possible, and Scream VII may end up taking a leaf out of Stab, the franchise-within-a-franchise, and start meddling with some really nonsensical stuff.

So, is Casey Becker really dead? Well, she is now, yes, but she could end up coming back by popular demand. Anything is possible.
