Does Kylo Ren Kill Grogu at the Jedi Academy?

Following The Book of Boba Fett's penultimate episode, "Chapter 6: From the Desert Came a Stranger", it's fair to say that fans are now giving some serious thought to Grogu's future in Star Wars canon. But the finale, "Chapter 7: In the Name of Honor", quickly threw any speculation into doubt. So what will actually happen with Grogu? Is he still enrolled at Luke Skywalker's brand-new Jedi Academy? And if he is, will Kylo Ren end up killing Grogu in the future, seeing as our little green friend is nowhere to be seen in the sequel trilogy?

In the penultimate episode, we discover that Grogu is already in training with Luke Skywalker on a mysterious forest planet, having been rescued by the iconic Jedi Knight in The Mandalorian Season 2 finale, "Chapter 16: The Rescue". It's not made clear how much time has passed, but it's likely been several months.

Grogu has learned to hone in on some of his Force abilities in that time, while Luke Skywalker and R2-D2 have enlisted the help of droids to build a new Jedi temple in the forest - and it's plain to see that it's the very same one that we see in ruins during a flashback in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, in which it's burning to the ground.

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Han Solo explains to Rey and Finn that Luke attempted to rebuild the Jedi Order, but went into exile when an apprentice turned to the dark side and killed his fellow Padawans before leaving the temple in ruins. As we know, that apprentice was Ben Solo - son of Han Solo and Leia Organa - who went on to become Kylo Ren.

On Ahch-To, Luke Skywalker tells Rey that he once considered killing Ben Solo, having discovered that Snoke had turned him to the dark side. As a result, Ben Solo - or, at this point, Kylo Ren - destroyed the Jedi school, and with it, all of its remaining students. Kylo later reiterates these events to Rey, though some details are slightly different.

These differences, however, can be explained away by the fact that they're two viewpoints from different people. But the bare bones of the events are the same - Luke tells Rey that he considered killing Ben, fearful that a new Darth Vader was about to be born, while Kylo tells Rey that his uncle absolutely tried to kill him in his sleep and that he woke up just in time.

Either way, we know that Kylo Ren left the Jedi temple in ruins and that he killed all the remaining Jedi Padawans. As Luke later tells Rey, she is the "last Jedi", which explains why there are seemingly no other Jedi - besides Rey, Luke, and Kylo Ren - left in the galaxy. So, the question for many fans now is, where in the galaxy is Grogu at this point in time?!

In the penultimate episode of The Book of Boba Fett, while in training with Luke Skywalker on a mysterious forest planet, a choice is given to Grogu: choose Yoda's old lightsaber and stay in training, with the risk of never seeing Din Djarin ever again, or choose the Mandalorian's beskar-armor gift and return to his care, no longer able to become a Jedi.

It's entirely possible that, while Grogu evidently chose to return to the care of Din Djarin, because we see the pair reunited in the epic finale, that he's merely on a vacation and intends to return to his Jedi training with Luke Skywalker. While this might sound a little silly, we don't know what agreement Grogu and Luke came to off-screen.

But there's a problem with this theory - why would the show even bother including a dilemma for Grogu if he's simply only visiting Din Djarin so that he can say his last goodbyes? Wouldn't that feel very cheap? Absolutely. But the other possibility feels equally cheap - that Grogu has indeed returned to Din's permanent care.

If this is the case, it renders The Mandalorian Season 2 entirely pointless, and begs to question whether Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau only created the story in which Din sets out to find a Jedi as an excuse to bring in Luke Skywalker. So, whether Grogu has returned to Din Djarin permanently or not, either scenario is pretty baffling, to say the least.

However, each scenario does have its own potential consequences. With Din Djarin, Grogu would be free from the inevitable danger of Kylo Ren in Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy. In other words, Grogu's destiny is not to become a Jedi. In fact, it's now being suggested, especially with his beskar armor, that Grogu may become a Mandalorian.

However, if Grogu does return to Luke Skywalker (which, at this point, would feel extremely back-and-forth, and almost ridiculous), then we can only assume that Luke goes on to train him for many years. Grogu is around 50 years old at the time of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, which makes him around five years old in human years.

As such, with the Star Wars sequel trilogy being set around 25 years after both of these shows, Grogu would only be around 75 years old/seven-and-a-half in human years at the time of those three movies, which means he would still very much be a child. So we can assume that he would absolutely still be in Luke Skywalker's care.

It's entirely possible that this is where the Grogu storyline is leaning towards, but the fact that he has so prematurely returned to Din Djarin pretty much throws everything up in the air. Having him connect with the sequel trilogy does answer many questions, but on the other hand, we can't imagine the showrunners wanting to kill Grogu at such a young age.

Perhaps the idea of showing Grogu in training with Luke Skywalker was ultimately nothing more than a cheap move, as opposed so some real connective tissue with the sequel trilogy, that would at the very least explain Grogu's whereabouts - or lack thereof - at the most up-to-date part of the Star Wars timeline.

While it's a horrible thought, having Kylo Ren being responsible for killing Grogu makes too much sense to ignore. It would also explain why Luke is so bitter and disenfranchised when Rey finds him on Ahch-To. Filoni and Favreau could really be onto something here, and it's something that could remedy certain elements of the sequel trilogy.

It's entirely possible that the most talked-about episode in The Book of Boba Fett ultimately means nothing, that the showrunners realized that committing Grogu to an off-screen life meant foregoing new merchandising opportunities, something that could also compromise The Mandalorian Season 3's otherwise inevitable success.

But there is another possibility...

If Kylo Ren does indeed end up killing Grogu, then this may very well be the best way at retconning the entire sequel trilogy. Not only would it explain the absence of Grogu and any other Jedi and the way Luke Skywalker has become in his later life, but it would also create an enormous opportunity to save the entire Star Wars franchise.

Animated show Star Wars: Rebels introduces the concept of time travel, something Ahsoka Tano is now heavily connected with. It's possible that her upcoming live-action show will deal with this galaxy-changing plot device. Perhaps the Togruta Jedi will see into the future and learn that Grogu will die at the hands of Kylo Ren.

And as we know, the "World Between Worlds" - the mystical dimension in which time travel is entirely possible - offers the opportunity to change the past, present, or future. Is it possible Ahsoka will decide to save the future-Grogu's life by altering things that are yet to pass? If so, this could result in two possible futures, one being the events of the sequel trilogy and one in which Grogu lives on to become the most powerful Jedi...
