About Made in Abyss
Made in Abyss is a fantasy anime created by mangaka Akihito Tsukushi's brilliant mind.
Since 2012, the Made in Abyss manga has been published on Takeshobo's digital publication Web Comic Gamma. The series has released ten tankobon manga volumes as of this writing and is still ongoing.
Kevin McMullin will direct the live-action film adaptation of the series. In addition, an action RPG game will be released in September 2022.
The series has four manga anthologies, so there's a lot more to catch up on if you're a Made in Abyss enthusiast.
The series follows Riko, a young aspiring white whistle cave raider who delves into the depths of the abyss in search of her mother, Lyza.
They traverse the dangers of the abyss with their robot humanoid companion, Reg, to the point of no return to the surface.
Do You Need to Watch Made in Abyss Movies Before Season 2?
If you've seen the first season of Made in Abyss from beginning to end, you don't need to watch the first two movies. The first two films, Made in Abyss: Journey's Dawn and Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight, are simply compilations of the first season's events.
If you want a more streamlined plot with brand new scenes and some foreshadowing here and there, you can opt to watch the first two films rather than the first season.
Most importantly, watch Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul before starting Season 2. You will miss a lot of details and events on the white whistle, Bondrewd, her adoptive daughter Prushka, and the events preceding Riko, Reg, and Nanachi's Last Dive to the sixth layer of the Abyss if you skip the third movie.
It is strongly recommended that you watch the third film before starting Made in Abyss Season 2. It will feel like a time jump in which you have no context for what happened prior to Season 2.
Are the Made in Abyss Movies Canon?
Yes, the Made in Abyss movies are canon. Despite the first two movies being compilations, there are some brand-new scenes and foreshadowing that are essentially part of the plot narrative of the series, particularly in the third movie.
