Disney’s X-Men '97 Reboot Showrunner Officially Unveils First Plot Details

One of the many highly anticipated multiverse additionals to the MCU is definitely none other than finally introducing the mutants in Marvel. Apart from Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine debuting alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 3, Disney+ and Marvel Studios are planning on an X-Men reboot show, X-Men ‘97, which will continue the iconic X-Men: The Animated Series that ran back from 1992-1997.

X-Men ‘97 showrunner Beau DeMayo recently spoke at the X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years Live Virtual Event (via Marvel), in which he shared first plot details on the upcoming X-Men reboot for Disney+. DeMayo unveils that the show will be “picking up several months after Professor X left Earth after being shot by Henry Gyrich”.

DeMayo continued on to say, “Despite the friends of humanity still having their mullets and getting all up in it, things are really starting to look up for mutants. And this is gonna kind of come to a head and leads our X-Men to say, ‘What does our future hold for us? We weren’t expecting this.’”

While unveiling the plot details, DeMayo doesn’t shy away mentioning the iconic team members we can expect in the X-Men reboot: “You’re gonna have Cyclops and Storm really wanting to carry on the dream. And they recruited Morph and Bishop to actually become full-time members of the team.”

Included in the roster are Jean and the ‘Will they, won’t they’ couple Gambit and Rogue, and the tease for Magneto having a change of heart, in which Magneto strives to be “a force of good for mutantkind.”

DeMayo concluded that the animated series will delve deeper into what the future looks like: “X-Men are kind of looking at the future and we’re going to be talking a lot about this, ‘How do you face the future?’ ‘How do the X-Men do what they’ve been telling humanity to do for decades, which is embrace the future?’”

Disney+’s X-Men ‘97 was initially coming out this fall 2023, however, the streaming site has tagged “Coming Soon” on the reboot for now.
