Disney to Keep Some of Its Movies in the Vault

We are just days away from the much-awaited launch of Disney+ and the arrival of hundreds of its beloved movies and television shows it has kept tucked away in its vault now available for streaming for the first time in decades. There is, however, an apparent caveat.

According to a report from CNBC, a number of the studio's movies won't be available for streaming upon its launch, and possibly forever. Some of these most recent films include Coco, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and 2017's live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast because of prior deals made with other streaming devices such as Hulu, Netflix, and HBO, all of which have their fair share of several Disney titles.

Films such as the recent The Lion King remake, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and this year's Aladdin also won't be available right away because they have yet to be made for home release, but are all expected to be added to the catalog.

There is also a matter of films co-produced in collaboration with other studios like Sony. This is the case for two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man flicks, which Disney may have to work on several rights issues with before it can stream them on Disney+.

It also, of course, won't be including its controversial films into the roster. Specifically, films like that of Song of the South, which has been garnering Disney flak since 1946. This is because of the film's racist portrayal of African Americans and its contribution to several derogatory stereotypes. It has also been criticized for its problematic take on the post-Civil War South.

Audiences may also expect some minor cleanups, with a few scenes being edited out or added in movies like Dumbo and Toy Story 2, which each having reportedly one scene taken out due to slightly suggestive natures.

Disney+ is set to launch on November 12.
