For the past several years, Disney has been producing live-action remakes of their beloved animated classics and there are still plenty of titles in their hundred-year catalog that have yet to receive the treatment. Fans have been wondering which animated classics will be stepping into the live-action world soon.
A while ago, it was reported that the 1970 animated film The Aristocats is set to have its own live-action remake with Peter Rabbit director Will Gluck involved as a producer and also co-writing the script with Keith Bunin. Now, we finally have a major update on the project as they finally found its director.
Deadline has confirmed that The Aristocats live-action remake is officially moving forward as Oscar winner and The Roots leader Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson is officially set to direct the film. He will also executive produce the project and oversee the music.
Thompson's hiring in the project comes as his documentary Summer of Soul, which was his directorial debut, became a huge critical hit in 2021 and won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Since then, the Roots band leader has been looking for his next directorial project and landed eventually with the Disney project.
The original film's synopsis reads: "With the help of a smooth talking tomcat, a family of Parisian felines set to inherit a fortune from their owner try to make it back home after a jealous butler kidnaps them and leaves them in the country." It almost spawned a sequel and animated series, but the plans were canceled.
It is interesting to hear that Questlove will be helming the film and, since has no experience directing a narrative feature, it is curious to see how his directorial flare will play in this project. However, as proven by his decades-long work in the music and film/TV scene, he is definitely a capable artist who can successfully pull off this movie.

Disney has not set a release window yet for the project. It is also unknown if it will release theatrically or streaming on Disney+.
