Disney Says It Doesn’t Want To Dethrone Netflix

Disney might be looking to have a piece of the pie in the streaming service industry with its upcoming streaming platform Disney +, but the Mickey Mouse House says that it isn't really looking to replace Netflix.

Walt Disney Company's Chairman of Direct-To-Consumer And International Relations Kevin Mayer recently spoke at an industry event held in Indonesia (via CBR), and during his discussion, the Disney bigwig revealed that the company's team developing Disney+ wasn't actually concerned with being "bigger than Netflix."

"Going all in with the new business model, disrupting the film business is not taken lightly," Mayer explained, "We're not after being bigger than Netflix or beating Netflix. Netflix is a very high-quality service, we're offering entirely different content. We'd just like to serve consumers well."

Mayer might say that the company isn't there to take out Netflix or other competitors in the streaming business game, but it seems like Disney still sure is there to compete.

"We'll utilize those fully and aggressively for sure," Mayer confirmed when asked whether Disney would utilize its television, film, theme park, and other media enterprises to promote the service.

Sure, Netflix might have a bigger library compared to the Mickey Mouse House's Disney+, but the company's Marvel and Star Wars offerings make it difficult for major fandoms to turn their backs on the upcoming streaming site. Disney owns some of the biggest pop culture franchises in history, and the company is definitely going to use that to its advantage.

After a few years, we're pretty sure that Disney will have expanded its streaming platform to properly compete (and probably obliterate) other streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu.
