Disney+ celebrated its first year with a massive bang. The streaming service, which officially launched exactly one year ago was able to meet and even exceed expectations, garnering a whopping 73.7 million subscribers during its first year alone. Now, that's an astonishing feat right there!
The House of Mouse proudly announced the milestone during a recent 4th quarter earnings call which was held last Thursday. Disney CEO Bob Chapek shared (via Variety): "Even with the disruption caused by COVID-19, we've been able to effectively manage our businesses while also taking bold, deliberate steps to position our company for greater long-term growth." He continued: "The real bright spot has been our direct-to-consumer business, which is key to the future of our company, and on this anniversary of the launch of Disney+ we're pleased to report that, as of the end of the fourth quarter, the service had more than 73 million paid subscribers – far surpassing our expectations in just its first year."
The streaming service's success can of course attributed to its content (original and existing) consisting of Disney classics, Star Wars, and of course Marvel. That's a pretty lethal combo right there and fans obviously eat 'em up. And although they're fairly new to the game, Disney+ is already proving to be a major player in the streaming world which has long been dominated by platforms like Hulu and Netflix. And considering the service isn't even available worldwide yet, its subscriber count is pretty damn impressive and it'll continue to grow in the coming months with the arrival of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's spinoff shows like WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Speaking of, one of Disney+'s top-rated shows The Mandalorian is now streaming its second season.
