Disney Announces New Sequels for Their Beloved Animated Movies

There is no doubt at this point that Disney delivered some of the most iconic and beloved animated films of all time. They became so popular that it has spawned sequels, prequels, live-action remakes, spin-offs, and theme park rides in Disneyland. Now, it looks like three of them will be getting another installment soon.

As reported by Deadline, during yesterday's Q1 earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that sequels to Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia are currently in the works. He didn't provide details regarding their plot or casting.

"Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia. We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises," he said.

The announcement was made in lieu of the recent financial setbacks that the company is currently facing which result in their plan of cutting $3 billion in content spending and layoffs of around 7,000 employees.

Recently, the studio's animation film division has also been experiencing some obstacles as Strange World and Lightyear underperformed at the box office while the Oscar-nominated Turning Red went straight to Disney+ despite the acclaimed reviews.

Now, it looks like Disney went back to its catalog and decided to do sequels to some of their beloved hits. Toy Story already has four films in its main series with the last two earning more than a billion. Frozen also had a second film back in 2019 which also grossed more than $1 billion dollars.

As for Zootopia, it will be the second film in its franchise. Last year, a short-form spinoff series was released on Disney+ titled Zootopia+ which focused on the secondary characters that we met in the first film that also earned more than $1 billion.

While the details are still scarce, it is interesting to see what they have in store for the upcoming sequels, especially in the case of the fifth Toy Story film since Toy Story 4 already felt like a closure of Woody's story in the series.
