Disenchanted is coming to Disney

Disenchanted is scheduled to hit our television screens on November 24, 2022, right on time for Thanksgiving.

Plans for the Enchanted sequel first emerged back in 2010, with Anna Fletcher originally taking the helm for the movie that was first set to release by 2011. There have been some changes since then, with Adam Shankman signing on to direct the film in 2016 and the script for the film finalized in 2018.

The cast and crew began filming for Disenchanted in May 2021, with most of the scenes shot in various locations around Ireland and the UK. Shankman announced the end of principal photography in August 2021 through an Instagram post. Some scenes for the movie were reshot in New York City in April 2022.

Writing the Perfect Script for Disenchanted

In an interview with People, Enchanted actor James Marsden (who played Prince Edward) shared how taking the time to find the right story and writing a perfect script may have contributed to why it took a while before the sequel came out.

I think maybe for a year or two, and there were conversations about what [a second movie] would look like and what the story would be. But for some reason, it just didn't happen. I don't know really why. And I was told over the years that they were trying to get it made and trying to get the script written. And finally, they got it together, and I was happy to jump back into the crazy suits and swing the sword again.

Patrick Dempsey is Robert Philip

Most of the actors who played major cast members in the first movie, Enchanted, will return to reprise their roles in the Disenchanted.

Giselle and Her Prince Charming

Fans of the first Enchanted movie will be delighted to see that Amy Adams will be returning as Giselle. Patrick Dempsey will also return to Robert Philip, Giselle's one true love. James Marsden will also be back to play the most charming of princes, Prince Edward.

Idina Will Get Her Own Song

Idina Menzel will also return to play Nancy in Disenchanted. Many of Idina's fans were disappointed when she was not given her own song, especially since Enchanted was a musical. This time around, however, Idina will have her own song to use her musical chops on.

In his interview with People, James Marsden teased Idina's song number in the movie.

It was a crime that in the first film, she's in a movie musical and you have Idina Menzel, and she doesn't sing a note. We've raised the bar by giving her some big, Stephen Schwartz, Alan Menken ... I can't say too much about what she sings, but original music, I'll say.

New Cast Members in Disenchanted

New faces will be joining the cast for Disenchanted!

Gabriella Baldacchino will play the teenager Morgan. Oscar Nuñez from The Office will play a character named Edgar. Joining Nuñez are Yvette Nicole Brown (from the show The Community), playing Rosaleen, and Jayma Mays (from the hit musical television show Glee), playing Ruby.

Maya Rudolph is the New Villain in Disenchanted

Disenchanted has a new villain this time around - Maya Rudolph will play Malvina Monroe.

Not much is known about Rudolph's character, but she talked about the opportunity to play a villain in her interview with Variety.

If this had been 15 years ago and someone asked if I wanted to be the bad guy, I might've been like, 'geez, I don't know. But I've come to learn in my many years that the most fun thing to get to do is when you get to play The Most.

Rudolph will be joined by Kolton Stewart, who will play Malvina's son.

Amy Adams as Giselle and Maya Rudolph as Malvina

Disenchanted will pick up 15 years after the ending of the first movie.

To recap, Enchanted tells the story of Giselle from Andalasia, a young girl woodland animal friend who was about to marry Prince Edward, her supposed one true love. When Giselle arrives at the castle for her wedding, Prince Edward's evil stepmother, Queen Narissa, sends Giselle away to the place where there are "no happy ever afters" – New York City.

Lost and alone in an unfamiliar place, Giselle was taken in by Morgan and her father, Robert, who works as a divorce lawyer. While waiting for her prince to rescue her, Giselle frolics around New York City with Robert and Morgan. Sparks fly between Giselle and the cynical lawyer, but Robert has a fiancé named Nancy, and then Prince Edward arrives to whisk Giselle back to Andalasia. Queen Narissa goes after the couple and casts a spell on Giselle, a spell that can only be broken by true love's kiss. Prince Edward does his best to bring Giselle back, but only Robert's kiss wakes Giselle up.

In the end, we see Giselle and Robert get married in New York, while Prince Robert marries Nancy in Andalasia.

In Disenchanted, Robert and Giselle move to a suburban Monroeville because of their growing family. Things are not as enchanted as Giselle hopes, so when an innocent spell goes awry, it is up to Giselle to fight for her and her family.

Disney released the official synopsis for the movie.

Fifteen years after the events of the first film, Giselle moves with Robert and Morgan to the suburb of Monroeville, where she's faced with juggling the challenges that come with a new home and discovering what happily ever after truly means to her and her new family.

The Disney Insider also released a longer Disenchanted synopsis.

Dive into the continuation of Giselle’s journey with Disenchanted, the sequel film to Enchanted from Walt Disney Live Action Studios releasing on Disney+. Happily Ever After…Again! Seeking a change from their busy lives in New York City, Giselle and Robert relocate their family to the suburb of Monroeville, a charming town reminiscent of Andalasia, the fairy-tale land where Giselle grew up. Their teenage daughter, Morgan, however, is less than thrilled. After a mishap in Morgan’s room at the new house, her entire wardrobe is ruined! And to make things worse, Giselle accidentally embarrasses Morgan in front of her peers at her new school. In a fit of anger, Morgan tells Giselle that she will never be her real mother, only her stepmother. Giselle is devastated. Desperate to alter her circumstances, she wishes on the Wand of Wishes for a fairy-tale life for her and her family. The next day, her wish comes true! But it isn’t without a price. Will Giselle get her happily-ever-after once again? Or is this the end for Giselle and all of Andalasia?
