Director Shares First Image From Upcoming Ghostbusters Afterlife Sequel


The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) has officially started production in London in the UK, and now, co-writer Jason Reitman and director Gil Kenan have shared the very first image from behind the scenes!

While we've no idea why Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 (2023) is currently preparing to film in London, it was recently reported that even the Ecto-1 had made the trip across the Atlantic, so it's clear that there's something strange in the UK neighborhood as well as in Manhattan, which is where the film is reportedly going to take place for the most part.

Now, production is officially underway, as the creators - co-writer Jason Reitman, who served as director on the 2021 film, and director Gil Kenan, who served as co-writer - have shared a black-and-white image via Instagram of them both sporting hard-hat gear (are they taking a trip down into London's sewer system, by any chance?!), which you can check out below:

While filming will initially take place in London, starting on March 6, it is expected that filming will continue in New York City, the home of the Ghostbusters. It has already been confirmed that the sequel will take place here, and will "continue the Spengler family story" first established in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

All the cast members introduced in Ghostbusters: Afterlife - McKenna Grace (Phoebe), Carrie Coon (Callie), Finn Wolfhard (Trevor), Paul Rudd (Gary Grooberson), Logan Kim (Podcast), and Lucky (Celeste O'Conner) - will be returning, along with Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore).

And though not confirmed, Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray, and Dan Aykroyd are also expected to reprise their roles as Dana Barret,, Peter Venkman, and Ray Stantz.

The film is currently going under the working title Firehouse.

From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film is written by Jason Reitman & Gil Kenan.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars McKenna Grace (Phoebe), Logan Kim (Podcast), Celeste O'Connor (Lucky), Finn Wolfhard (Trevor), Carrie Coon (Callie), Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz), Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett), Paul Rudd (Gary Grooberson), Olivia Wilde (Gozer the Gozerian), JK Simmons (Ivo Shandor), Bill Murray (Dr. Peter Venkman), Dan Aykroyd (Dr. Ray Stantz), and Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore).

Ghostbusters 4 will be released on December 20, 2023. It will be the fifth Ghostbusters movie, following Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters II (1989), Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016), and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but only the fourth in the main series of films.

A number of other Ghostbusters projects are also in the works, including a Ghostbusters animated movie, a Ghostbusters animated series, a new limited edition comic book, and a virtual reality game titled Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord (2023).
