It's a monumental week for the comic book fandom as DC Studios finally unveiled its upcoming movie and television slate that aims to reestablish the DC Universe as a mega-franchise with shared continuity. Co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran excitingly shared what the future holds for the DCU, with its first chapter dubbed "Gods and Monsters".
While the duo is undeniably focused on mapping out the future of the DCU, it seems that they are still haunted by the creative decisions the previous regime has made. One of which is the shocking cancelation of the standalone Batgirl project, a move that was deemed uncalled for by fans.
During DC Studios' press interview for their movie slate presentation (via Deadline), co-CEO Peter Safran had some pretty harsh remarks about the canned project top-billed by Leslie Grace which would have also seen Michael Keaton's involvement. While he praises the people who worked on the film, Safran claims it's not release-worthy.
He said: "I saw the movie. There are a lot of incredibly talented people in front of and behind the camera in that film, but that was not releasable. It happens sometimes."
Safran also added that greenlighting the film's release would have hurt the franchise. He did add that the door is still open for the project's directors to do other projects with them in the future. "I think [Warner Discovery CEO David] Zaslav and the team made a bold and courageous decision to cancel it, because it would have hurt DC and those people involved. I spoke to [Batgirl directors] Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah last week — we’d love to be in business with all of them."

Well, it's safe to assume that the film won't ever see the light of day, despite the attempt from fans to kickstart a campaign. It's a shame but obviously, there's nothing any of us can do about it.
Meanwhile, the DCU's first chapter begins with Superman: Legacy which is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2023.
