Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Project Orion Announced by CD Projekt Red

CD Projekt Red has officially announced a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, currently codenamed Project Orion. The news comes from the developer's tweet on Tuesday, in which the company described its long-term development plan, revealing that Project Orion will "take the Cyberpunk franchise further and continue harnessing the potential of this dark future universe."

CD Projekt Red didn't share a release window and additional details about the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.

In a video published to YouTube, Adam Kiciński, CD Projkekt’s president and CEO, said that the next three games in the developer's pipeline are based on The Witcher franchise, meaning that the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 won't likely be released within a few years. He said that the sequel is an ambitious title that will require expanding CD Projekt's more than 1,200-person studio even further; a new hub will be opened in Boston as CD Projekt Red North America. The development team there will focus on Project Orion alongside its Vancouver location.

Alongside the update, Marcin Iwiński, CD Projekt joint CEO, announced that he's stepping down from the position and is looking to join the studio's supervisory board as chairman. According to Iwiński, the role will be a non-executive role, which will allow him to support the management board and "remain active and engaged" as a major shareholder.

Cyberpunk 2077 was originally released in late 2020, but the launch was pretty rocky as the game had so many bugs and other performance issues, which prompted Sony Interactive Entertainment to pull it entirely off its PlayStation Store. Microsoft also offered refunds, and according to Ars Technica, expected cost reached at least $51 million in refunds and lost sales.

Over the past two years, CD Projekt Red has been updating Cyberpunk 2077 continuously. It's clear that the developer still had major plans for Cyberpunk beyond the first game. After Studio Trigger's Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was released on Netflix, the game welcomed a rush of returning players, so it's clear that players were still willing to return to RPG. CD Projekt is also working on a story-driven expansion titled Phantom Liberty, and according to the developer, 350 people are working on it.
