Criminal Minds: Evolution is now available on Paramount Plus, and fans are eager to see where it will take the crew. But there is one difference: two of the beloved characters will not be returning.
The Behavioral Analysis Unit, an elite FBI division entrusted with analyzing the thoughts of the most dangerous offenders, was featured in the series. They were able to apprehend these hazardous individuals thanks to their insight.
The original show premiered in 2005 and ran for an astounding 15 years.
Two Legacy Characters Didn't Sign in on Criminal Minds: Evolution
Both Daniel Henney, who played Matt Simons, and Matthew Gray Gubler, who played Dr. Spencer Reid, chose not to join Criminal Minds: Evolution.
Erica Messer, the project's showrunner, reportedly told TV Line that she doesn't want to reveal too much about what happened to the characters on the show. She doesn't mind discussing the actors that played them, though.
Messer opined that the stars are currently just too busy to take part in the revival. But that doesn't imply that she has given up on getting them to come back.
"Dr. Reid's and I believe Matt Simmons' desks are still there, still have stuff on it … Like, if any of you went back [to the office after the pandemic], you still have stuff on your desk that was there for two years," Messer said.
"So we're definitely playing that. But [Spencer and Matt] are not gone gone."
She noted that the crew hopes that the members of the team with whom the program completed the season on CBS would be able to return and participate at some time, "but everybody does have other projects."
Erica Messer Enthusiastic About Criminal Minds: Evolution
Fans were overjoyed when it was announced that the team will return for a revival. Messer is excited about the upcoming series, according to Parade.
"The first year has 10 episodes and explores what our heroes have been up to since February of 2020, which is the last time you saw them, or, as we call it, 'the before times,'" she explained. "The BAU, like a lot of workplaces, has had some change. These past few years have made the team count on one another a lot more."
Where to See Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney
Unfortunately, Gubler has been less active as an actor in recent years. He appeared in the 2021 film King Knight. He also appeared in two cameos, one on Hulu's Dollface and the other on Netflix's Horse Girl.
Meanwhile, Henney has been hard at work since the end of the original Criminal Minds. He transitioned from one drama to the next, as Lan Mandragoran in the Amazon Prime series The Wheel of Time. He also appeared in the television film Occult.

Whatever keeps the two actors busy, fans hope they'll find time to return to Criminal Minds: Evolution. Fans would like to see the entire crew together again, whether they rejoin the squad permanently or just make an appearance.
