Horror series creator Don Mancini spoke to fans at New York Comic-Con about the inspiration behind the show and his future plans as Chucky Season 2 got underway.
Fans of the horrific killer doll, Chucky, have received a new lease of life thanks to the horror series. As a follow-up to the film franchise's Cult of Chucky, Chucky Season 1 featured several beloved characters like Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif), and Brad Dourif. Horror enthusiasts are well aware of how Cult of Chucky concluded and how it relates to the series' plot.
However, the series introduces a new cast of primary people who must deal with Chucky's unstable mentality. So far, Chucky has been a fantastic fit for the franchise, adding more murder, blood, and scary moments. Fans enjoyed the series' creative liberties with Charles Lee Ray, the soul inside the doll.
The franchise had a few loose ends that the series handled to some extent over its run. Fans were eventually told how Lee Ray met Tiffany and the killer's childhood.
Don Mancini Talks Chucky Season 2, 'Chuckyverse' Plans
After the debut of its first episode, Chucky Season 2 was immediately a huge success and is redefining horror on television. The creator was questioned about if adapting the Chucky tale into a television series had long been an ambition of his at the New York Comic-Con panel.
"Yeah. It's been a dream for a while since I first worked on Hannibal for Bryan Fuller, is when I first started thinking about it," Mancini explained. "And one of the reasons I wanted to bring it to television is because when I first worked on Hannibal, I just saw that the process of making television by its very nature, if you do it correctly, that you had the right writers and directors, then I knew I could elevate it."
However, Mancini was quickly questioned on what the series, its characters, stories, and popularity imply for the original film franchise. The moderator proposed the concept of a "Chuckyverse."
"That's my biggest dream is to be able to have it like Marvel. To have the television series going on, the movies happening, and other tv spinoffs happening. Who wouldn't want that?" he said.
What's Next On Chucky Season 2
It makes it obvious that Mancini would bring back fan favorites, given the series' connection to the original films. Fans watched Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany and herself, together with Andy and Nica, in the first season. However, the opening episode of Chucky Season 2 also featured the return of an older form of a Mancini creation that had been hinted at.
Fans experienced a meta moment while viewing Tiffany's exact blonde version doll. The therapist gives Lexi's sister a new doll to help her cope. The doll just so happens to be wearing a bridal gown and has black hair. Devon (Björgvin Arnarson) informs Jake and Lexi later in the episode that the doll is similar to the one from Bride of Chucky. They're also aware that Tilly is Chucky's lover.
But the Chucky Season 2 trailer also shows Glen and Glenda, who are portrayed by Lachlan Watson, making their dramatic entrance. In Bride of Chucky, the characters made their franchise premiere. The offspring of the two dolls, Glen, has a feminine alter ego but is not a killer. The series follows up with elder versions of Glen and Glenda after the movie's ending when their souls have already evolved into humans.
