Shigeru Miyamoto made the announcement on the official Nintendo of America Twitter account. In the tweet, Miyamoto confirmed that the decision was made by him and Illumination. The Super Mario Bros. creator also stated that although it will be a long wait fans will truly enjoy the movie as soon as it is dropped.

"This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait," Miyamoto wrote.

The film was originally set to premiere in December 2022 and would have been available for streaming on Peacock by early 2023. There have even been reports that the film had already completed production and would have been ready for release by the end of the year.
