China Prohibits Mulan Promotions Ahead of Theatrical Release Amidst Xinjiang Controversy

Mulan might finally be available on Disney+ but the film has yet to be seen by anyone living in China. After all, the live-action reboot is still set for a theatrical release this Friday. Unfortunately, it looks like the media will not be able to cover the upcoming event. The Chinese government has just prohibited all promotions of the Disney movie amidst the ongoing Xinjiang controversy.

It was previously reported that Mulan's post-credits made "special thanks" to eight government entities in the Xinjiang region in China. In addition to that, it was revealed that some of the production took place in East Turkestan where it has been confirmed that Chinese authorities still imprison and torture Uyghurs and other Muslim groups in re-education camps.

The revelation did not go unnoticed. According to Reuters, several sources have confirmed that they received a notice telling them to refrain from covering Mulan this week. Although there was no reason stated, it is believed that the notice was sent after the Xinjiang controversy.

The issue with the Xinjiang region isn't the only thing that Mulan is facing ahead of its Chinese theatrical release. Protesters have re-ignited their stand against the film and brought back Liu Yifei's previous statement confirming her support for the Hong Kong police. Although the star of the movie has been quiet these days, protestors have once again trended the hashtag #BoycottMulan.

Mulan is currently available on Disney+ by purchasing the Premier Access. It is scheduled for release in China on September 11.
