The anime industry continues to thrive as it enters another beloved anime series in its roster on getting their very own live-action movie, and that is Cells at Work! Though no release date has been set yet, Warner Bros. Pictures Japan has just confirmed that the live-action movie is set to hit the big screen under director Hideki Takeuchi alongside script writer Yuichi Tokunaga.

According to a report by way of Eiga, Cells at Work is definitely one of the biggest film projects in the Japanese film industry, seeing as it is considered to be the industry’s “largest scale” to date. It’s only natural, seeing as Cells at Work focuses on depicting how the human body works by showing blood cells and cancer cells in human form, which leads the series to its main purpose aimed at educating its viewers on our bodily functions.

Created by Akane Shimizu, the Cells at Work anime began in January 2015, with the manga coming to a close six years later. However, it did conjure a spinoff titled Cells at Work: Code Black, which had also garnered great success for the series. David Production had released the anime in 2018 followed by an animated movie two years later (2020).

It is worth mentioning that director Hideki Takeuchi and writer Yuichi Tokunaga have already previously collaborated on live-action films before, which was Fly Me to the Saitama. Other notable live-action works under the director are Nodame Cantabile’s drama series and films, and Thermae Romae, while the writer had also written scripts for the live-adaptations of Kaguya-Sama: Love is War and Liar Liar.

Nothing has been decided yet for the Cells at Work’s live-action cast members as of writing.

This project is undoubtedly a huge step forward for the anime industry, considering that live-action adaptations have a much more difficult time when it comes to depicting the storytelling the anime version had already provided. As for whether the live-action film will be retelling the same plot from scratch, it remains unclear. However, it would be wise to focus on one storyline, seeing as the adaptation is going to be a movie, not a live drama series.
