Netflix has its fair share of period dramas on its platform. One of its newly released shows, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, has quickly risen to the top of the charts.

The show was only released last May 12, 2023, yet it already has a number of fans. It is a spinoff series to another period drama by Shonda Rhimes called Bridgerton.

The six-part limited series looks into the backstories of some of the characters in the original show, including Queen Charlotte, Violet Bridgerton, and Lady Danbury. But just as its title suggests, the show focuses on Queen Charlotte and her marriage to King George III.

With such an interesting character, we can't help but wonder if Queen Charlotte was a real historical person. And if so, the happenings in the period drama are based on real events.

Here's what we know about this.

You may be wondering whether Queen Charlotte from the Bridgerton universe was a real person in history. If you thoroughly look back in record books, there was actually a Queen Charlotte in history.

The character was based on Princess Sophie Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. After marrying King George III in 1761, she was crowned the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland.

The real-life Queen Charlotte got married at the age of 17 and had 15 kids with him. She also had a brother called Adolphus.

But as far as historical facts go, those are the only things that Rhimes included in the show.

While Queen Charlotte was based on a real-life person, the character in the show is entirely made up. After all, the show does have a disclaimer in the opening credits that read:

It is not a history lesson. It is fiction inspired by fact.

Still, the real-life Queen Charlotte was a woman to look up to. After all, being the mother of 15 children takes a lot of courage.
