Breaking Down The Avengers: Infinity War Trailer

It’s been four long months since Avengers: Infinity War footage was screened exclusively for those in attendance at Comic-Con International and D23 Expo. Now, the first official trailer for the upcoming Marvel Studios blockbuster is finally here, and it’s pretty safe to say that it was well worth the wait.

Follow along with us as we break down the exciting new footage:

  1. Hulk’s Return To Earth

When we last saw the Green Goliath, he was aboard the refugee ship carrying the Asgardians after their home was decimated by Surtur. As for his return, it looks like Banner’s homecoming will hearken back to his freefall in The Avengers, where he fell from the helicarrier as Hulk and woke up as Bruce after falling through a barn. This time, though, it’s the Sanctum Sanctorum that received the collateral damage.

  2. Holy Handsome, Vision!

If not for the glow of the Mind Stone, you’d be forgiven for not realizing that this is actually Vision. Apparently, he’ll take on a human form as he woos Scarlet Witch.

  3. This’ll Get Your Spidey Sense Tingling

In Spider-Man: Homecoming, the only thing that really felt like it was missing was Peter’s spidey sense. However, we finally get to see it on display here, as the hairs on Peter’s arms stand up straight when danger’s present. And speaking of danger…

  4. Thanos’… Ship?... Weapon?...

We can say with absolute certainty that Thanos has some sort of massive circular machine. What we don’t really know is what it is. It could be a ship, an engine, a weapon, or even a portal. In any case, it seems to have everyone’s attention.

  5. The Fate Of The Asgardians

In the mid-credits scene of Thor: Ragnarok, we see Thanos’ massive ship approach the aforementioned refugee ship carrying the Asgardians. Here, we see what appears to the aftermath of that encounter, and it doesn’t look good for the Asgardians.

  6. Ever The Trickster

When Loki was eying the Tesseract in Thor: Ragnarok, there was little to no doubt that he swiped it from Odin’s vault. However, we still don’t know what his intentions are. Loki seemingly turned over a new leaf in Ragnarok, but this is the God of Mischief, so who knows? Besides, he seems to be offering it to someone, and the next person we see is the Mad Titan, himself. Speaking of which…

  7. Thanos Arrives

After hearing a brief Josh Brolin voiceover, we finally get our first look at Thanos in the trailer, and he definitely looks imposing. Emerging from a portal, the Mad Titan observes his surroundings, which appear to be Wakanda, so perhaps this is where he believes one of the Infinity Stones is hidden.

  8. The Iron Spider Suit

We got a tease of Peter’s new suit at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, although he turned it down at the time. Nevertheless, something in Infinity War will ultimately lead to him sporting the costume that evokes memories of the Iron Spider suit that was first introduced in the Civil War event.

  9. Enter Proxima Midnight

We only get a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it look at Proxima Midnight, a member of Thanos’ Black Order. Still, it’s an epic shot, as the fearsome warrior hurls her spear at a shadowy, yet oddly familiar figure, who’s quick to catch the projectile. Who could it be, though?

  10. It’s Captain Ameri-Beard!

To the surprise of no one, the shadowy figure is revealed to be Captain America, who’s sporting a full beard and a shaggier mane than we’re used to seeing. The shot immediately follows Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa shouting, “get this man a shield,” which is a great touch.

  11. The Hulkbuster Armor’s Back

It’s hardly uncommon for Tony Stark to sport multiple suits of armor in a single film (because toys), but seeing the Hulkbuster armor from Avengers: Age of Ultron make a reappearance is a welcome surprise. Of course, he won’t be using it to tangle with the Green Goliath (right?), but rather Thanos’ army of Outriders.

  12. Thanos’ Outriders

Speaking of Outriders, we get a pretty decent look at one of them getting roughed up by Black Panther in what promises to be a key sequence in Wakanda. In the comics, the Outriders are genetically engineered humanoid creatures with abilities such as telepathy, invisibility, and even Vision-like density manipulation.

  13. Squashing The Spider

Thanos demonstrates his might by tossing around Spider-Man like a ragdoll, and even with Stark technology, you have to believe Spidey’s no match for the Mad Titan. This is immediately followed by a shot of a visibly distressed Tony Stark, so perhaps we’re going to see more of the mentor/mentee dynamic that was central to the plot of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

  14. It Was Only A Matter Of Time

When the Mind Stone was not only used to create Vision but actually embedded in his forehead, we all knew that this moment was inevitable. To be fair, though, we don’t actually see the stone get ripped from his head, but even if it is misdirection, he’s going to lose it at some point.

  15. Assembling The Gauntlet

This shot following what we see with Vision is meant to lead you to believe that he loses the Mind Stone. However, the one Thanos places into the Infinity Gauntlet is blue, which indicates that it’s actually the Space Stone. Again, Vision will lose the Mind Stone, but it’s unlikely that it will be plucked from his head and immediately placed into the gauntlet as the trailer implies.

  16. Assembling The Gauntlet, Part Deux

Even with only two-thirds of the Infinity Stones, Thanos is still a powerhouse. Here, we see him deliver an absolutely devastating right hook to a prone Iron Man, and you can’t imagine his armor’s going to do much good against the Mad Titan’s massive fist.

  17. Battle In Wakanda

Here, we get another shot of the massive battle sequence in Wakanda. Falcon swoops in, firing round after round at the Outriders, but it doesn’t seem to slow them down much.

  18. Secret Avengers?

This shot of Cap, Hulk, Black Widow, Winter Soldier, Black Panther, Okoye, and War Machine seems to hint that Cap’s taken it upon himself to form his very own Avengers team. Given the fact that this is following up from Captain America: Civil War, one can’t help but make the comparison to the Secret Avengers, although this roster’s certainly a bit different from the comics.

  19. The Meeting We’ve Been Waiting For

The Avengers coming face-to-face with the Guardians of the Galaxy is something we’ve been waiting for since 2014. Here, we get a small taste of that fateful encounter, as Thor (still sporting an eyepatch) finds himself in the presence of Star-Lord, Groot, Gamora, Mantis, Rocket, and Drax in the closing shot of the trailer.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters May 4, 2018.
