Blade Runner 2099 Gets Series Order at Amazon

Amazon has given a series order to the Blade Runner live-action series titled Blade Runner 2099 according to a report from Variety. The project was first announced by original film director Ridley Scott last year before it was set up for development at Amazon earlier this year.

The plot details for the series are being kept under wraps, but it will take place 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049 as the title suggested. Silka Luisa will serve as the showrunner and executive producer alongside Scott, Michael Green, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, Isa Dick Hackett, and Tom Spezialy.

Blade Runner 2099 will be the second TV series based on the beloved film. The first one is the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus which aired on Adult Swim from November 2021 to February 2022. Crunchyroll co-produced the series and streamed it in Japanese with English subtitles.

"The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers," Vernon Sanders, head of global television for Amazon Studios, said in a statement.

"We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors."

It is exciting to hear that Blade Runner 2099 is officially moving forward at Amazon and fans of the first two films will definitely anticipate the upcoming series. It's also a great addition to Amazon Prime Video, which is currently the home of hit shows such as The Boys and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It is interesting to see what they have in store for this new installment in the franchise.
