Black Mirror Season 6 is finally here. After four years, the fan-favorite dystopian anthology series is back for a new season, but what took Netflix so long to do it?

Netflix has dropped the first teaser trailer for Black Mirror Season 6, giving a glimpse at another set of dark, societal issues fans are about to see. The four-year wait might be worth it with Charlie Brooker again at the helm.

What Took the Making of Black Mirror Season 6 So Long?

It was in June 2019 when the show’s fifth season was released. Since then, there have been no words about the series’ future until May 2022.

The following year saw the start of the global pandemic. As the world stopped, the production of several TV series and movies was put to a halt, too.

Brooker even found it awkward to do stories about societies falling apart amid the damaging effect of COVID-19 on the world.

“I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart,” he told Radio Times.

But aside from that, Screen Rant noted that IP rights were the main reason for the delay in making Black Mirror Season 6.

Endemol Shine Group owned the rights to the show. Brooker and Annabel Jones used to work for the said production company but left to create their own.

The two failed to take the series’ rights with them. Though Netflix and Endemol tried to strike a deal, it was to no avail.

The Rights to Black Mirror

When Banijay bought Endemol, the entertainment company became the owner of Black Mirror’s rights.

Netflix once again tried to strike a deal with Banijay, and rumors started to swirl that a spinoff to the episode USS Callister would be made in 2021. But nothing came to fruition.

The deals to make Black Mirror Season 6 went cold, though there were a few updates here and there.

Finally, in May 2022, the streaming giant renewed the show for a sixth season after reaching a deal with Banijay, Variety claimed.

And though Brooker and Jones started their own company, they were still involved in the new season.

The sixth season’s production began in the same month and filmed under the codename, Red Book, to ensure secrecy, What’s on Netflix reported.

Thankfully, fans will see Black Mirror Season 6 hitting the small screens after four years in June.
