Bella Ramsey Expresses Controversial Take on The Last of Us Finale

Original fans who played the Naughty Dog video game would be lying if they said The Last of Us finale on HBO wouldn’t set off the fandom back into the rabbit hole. The common first reactions of the audience when it came to witnessing Joel Miller’s (portrayed by Pedro Pascal) endgame decision always caused chaotic debates on the internet and the show made no difference.

Now, Bella Ramsey (who portrayed Ellie) has been quite open when it comes to debunking what the show should mean, and Joel’s decision is not an exemption.

“Oh, don’t ask me if Joel made the right decision. I mean, I think he made the right decision. And I think most people agree.” Ramsey said in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, “From the reaction to the series as well, I think more people are like, ‘He definitely made the right decision.’”

Ramsey continued on to say how Joel didn’t even have a choice in the first place: “I don’t think it was even a choice. I don’t think it was even a decision for him. There was no other option other than to save her. Because he didn’t save — He did save the world. But like, his world. That’s so cringey, but kind of true.”

The Last of Us Season 2 is perfectly set up precisely because of what happens in the first season finale. And what really ticked off fans is not on Joel’s decision, per se, but his first instinct to lie to Ellie, instead of telling her the truth behind his actions.

Ellie’s survival guilt is what constantly bothered the character in the series, and to witness one of the only people she thought she could trust ‘betray’ her drives her into a corner. And unfortunately, this decision yet again leads to a bigger twist on what The Last of Us Season 2 has in store.

The Last of Us Season 2 has no confirmed release date yet. In the meantime, all episodes of The Last of Us Season 1 are streaming on HBO Max.
