Avatar 2 Described as "Most Insanely Complicated Movie Ever" Following New Footage Unveiling


New footage of James Cameron's upcoming sequel Avatar 2: The Way of Water (2022) has been unveiled, and now the film is being described as “the most insanely complicated movie ever made”. But what exactly was seen?

During James Cameron's speech at Digital Day, completed scenes from the film were shown. Writer/director Liam O'Donnell took to Twitter to discuss what he had seen, saying the following:

"AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER appears to be the most insanely complicated movie ever made. Holy s**t. James Cameron’s Digital Day keynote just broke brain."

He went on to talk about the underwater performances in the movie:

"*my brain! Just the amount of data they captured... Underwater performance capture with 15 cameras. 2 cams on every actor’s face capture. Underwater reference capture for fully CG creatures. Oh yeah and infrared depth capture to place CG characters in the live action footage"

Clearly excited by what he had seen, O'Donnell continues at great length with a series of follow-up tweets, describing the film as "the edible movie of the decade" and praising the cast and crew for the intense underwater scenes.

He also discussed Stephen Lang's return as a Na'vi, saying that the "new Avatar-Quaritch and his conflict and journey sounds f***ing awesome", while warning audiences not to "bet against [James] Cameron".

Prior to the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, a re-mastered version of Avatar (2009) will be re-released in movie theaters. Re-mastered elements include picture and sound. Screenings will begin on September 23, 2022.

Avatar 2: The Way of Water is scheduled for release in theaters on December 16. It will be released exclusively in theaters, as well as in the following formats - Dolby Cinema, IMAX, and IMAX 3D formats.

Avatar 3 will release on December 20, 2024. Avatar 4 will follow on December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028, respectively.
