It has been years since the live-action series reimagination of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix has been announced and now, the streaming giant finally breaks the silence on the status of the show as it formally introduced on Twitter the faces of the characters as they reveal the cast members of the much-awaited adaptation.
In 2018, Netflix proudly announced that a reimagination or a remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender will be under their roof, and production of the show went through in 2019. Now, they finally revealed the cast of the series with Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentio as Katara, Dallas Liu as Zuko, and Ian Ousley as Sokka.
The original creators of the show, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, have planned for the show to have "a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast." However, the road wasn't smooth for the series. Just as it went into production in 2019, DiMartino and Konietzko left the project the following year due to creative differences.
By February this year, a showrunner has been brought into the series with Albert Kim. While the timeline definitely moved for the production, at least, there is already someone new making the decisions and calling the shots, and finally, they just announced the major cast members of the show, still staying true to the original plan of having a non-whitewashed cast.

The new showrunner, Kim, shared in a blog post that the process of creating the show is so amazing and intriguing at the same time that this version remained faithful to the animated version and it also has a new visual dimension that will bring the viewers into a fantastic world in the series. Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action would really bend in real life, thanks to the visual effects technology used.
More than that, Kim also noted that this adaptation's casting would bring into the table representation for a new generation of fans showcasing Asian and Indigenous people, not only in cartoons but in the live-action series as well.
