Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is expected to be the biggest film yet in the titular hero's MCU trilogy. Not only majority of it is set in the Quantum Realm, but it will also explore the concept of time travel and the multiverse even further with the official introduction of Kang the Conqueror.
However, this is not the first time that we've seen an MCU film exploring the time travel concept since it was a key plot device in Avengers: Endgame that led to the heroes bringing back all the living beings that were snapped by Thanos.
Although the earlier introduction of the time travel concept in the MCU has posed some challenges for the writer of Quantumania, who admitted in a recent interview with SFX Magazine (via The Direct) that he feels "bummed" about Endgame's time travel due to changes that he has to make for Kang.
Jeff Loveness, who wrote the upcoming film, explained that due to the earlier film's time travel plot point, he now has to broaden out Kang into the multiverse instead of the usual time-hopping like in the comics.
"I haven’t seen a time-travelling character done with such intricacy and exploration. I’m a little bummed because Endgame did so much time travel, so you almost need to broaden him out a little bit too, maybe broaden out into the multiverse a little more, the dimensionality of the character, the limitless freedom he has while also being completely uprooted from his time and himself," he said.
"Is it just going to all fall apart again because another version of him can destroy it as well? What’s the purpose of building Rome if you are going to burn it down the next day, because they want to have their own Rome?"
The writer also revealed that, while he used the comics as the basis for writing Kang in the film, he still made some changes to the character and "throw a curveball" to subvert fans' expectations.
He added, "I certainly took a ton from the comics but the joy of these movies is you also get to put some of yourself into it, you get to put a completely new spin because if you just do a 100% comic book adaptation people know all the tricks and what to expect."
"You have to use that as a foundation and then throw a curveball. I’ve tried to lean into him being a more interesting character than people expect, hopefully."
Based on his comments, it sounds like the MCU version of Kang the Conqueror won't be exactly like the comics and they made some adjustments to his translation to the screen. Despite that, it looks like he is still going to be a huge threat either way and it's exciting to see what they have in store with his debut.
